How to Choose the Perfect Stateroom for Your Cruise
It may seem obvious, but selecting the right location for your stateroom or suite is essential to ensuring a fantastic cruise experience. While seasoned cruisers often have a favourite deck, position, or even stateroom number, first-time cruisers might find it a little daunting to get it right on the first try. We’ve put together a few tips and suggestions to help you select the best location for your cruise holiday.

Forward, Midship or Aft
The physical location of your stateroom can have a big impact on your holiday. Staterooms located at the forward (front) or aft (back) of the ship are usually offered at a more affordable price point, as they can be more affected by moderate or rough seas. Choosing a stateroom midship (middle) can provide a more stable experience and is often recommended for those concerned about motion.
What is Above & Below You
Noise on a ship can sometimes come from above or below your stateroom, potentially impacting your overall experience. Ideally, select a stateroom that is surrounded by other guest accommodations both above and below. This helps ensure a quieter stay. Avoid selecting a room directly beneath high-traffic areas like theatres, where sound systems can be heard if you retire early, or under buffet restaurants, where early-morning chair and trolley noise might be disruptive. Similarly, having the pool deck directly above can result in hearing deck chairs moving or music playing.
Proximity to Elevators
If you are sensitive to noise, it’s worth selecting a stateroom at least three to four doors away from elevator lobbies and stairwells, as these areas experience higher foot traffic and elevator chimes. However, for guests with mobility needs, being closer to an elevator lobby can be highly beneficial for ease of access around the ship.
How High Should You Be?
Another factor to consider is how high your stateroom is located. In moderate or rough seas, the higher you are, the more movement you may feel because you are further from the ship’s centre of gravity.
Finding the Best Location
For those who are sensitive to noise, we recommend choosing a stateroom that is surrounded above and below by guest accommodations and positioned a few staterooms away from elevator lobbies and stairwells. Try to avoid being directly under high-footfall areas such as the pool deck or buffet restaurant.
For guests prone to sea or motion sickness, it is important to select a stateroom that is midship and on a lower deck, where movement is less noticeable.
For those with mobility concerns, being close to an elevator lobby provides greater ease of access to the rest of the ship.
